A short journey today for Kettering Town as they visit Stamford AFC for an FA Trophy 2nd Round tie. The Poppies should’ve been fresh from their demolition of the Linnets on Tuesday but were hit with a bug and the squad has been decimated, but new signing Dan Holman will start.

The match gets underway in the wet with Kettering playing in a blue away strip and the host wearing all red. Holman fires one over the crossbar and White watches as a shot flashes wide of his goal as the two teams get straight down to business. The sun comes out and maybe it will improve the quality of the football this afternoon.

Goal!GOAL: Duffy shoots but White makes a good save in the Poppies goal. Richens played in by Meikle but his shot is held by Stamford keeper Haystead. Kettering go a goal down and ex-poppy Jon Challinor is the scorer. He was helped by a slip from the attending Poppies defender but finished well past White to give Stamford a 1-0 lead.

Kettering looking to immediately respond but Hoenes is adjudged offside when he looked to be clean through on goal. Good feet from Holman feeds Meikle but again the finishing is poor. Kettering just struggling a little to get fully into their rhythm in this first-half, maybe they can sort it out for the second as they have done in previous matches. Richens shoots but again straight at the keeper and Kelly fires wide.

Half-time:   Stamford AFC 1    Kettering Town 0

The second-half gets underway with Toseland replaced by Stohrer for Poppies. Stohrer fouled on edge of area, up steps Lindon Meikle but it’s easy for the keeper to make the save. Lets hope they changed into their shooting boots at the break! No sign of a comeback yet so Kettering make a change as Borg replaces Graham. Holman flagged offside when it looked as though we’d pull level.

It could be one of those days for Poppies where they just can’t find the net and I have to admit that I’d rather choose them winning the league than doing well in any cup competitions this season. Back to back corners for Kettering but they are easily cleared. Hoenes booked for a challenge on Eze, bit harsh. Into the final fifteen minutes and Kettering headed out the Trophy as it stands.

It’s a penalty to Kettering. A foul in the area and the referee points straight to the penalty spot. Up steps the dependable Solkhon and would you believe it Haystead makes the save. That’s the first penalty miss by the Poppies this season and just about sums up their afternoon. Stamford look to be parking the bus for the final 10 minutes or so and make a substitution, off goes the goalscorer Challinor and on comes Brown-Hill.

A second change as Adams is replaced by Fortnam-Tomlinson and it looks like two attackers replaced by two defenders signalling the hosts intentions to just protect their slender lead and see this one out. White slip almost lets them in on goal but it’s scrambled clear. The referee goes over to the touchline and shows the red card to the Stamford manager, strange when your team is winning and minutes to go, but there you go.

That penalty miss looks like costing Kettering their FA trophy tie but to be honest I for one won’t be too heartbroken that we’re not falling behind on the much more important league fixtures. Into time added on and it’s last ditch time for Poppies but they can’t seem to find a way past the packed Stamdford defence. There goes the final whistle and Kettering are out.

The Poppies were severely lacking in quality today and didn’t have their shooting boots on. They were given a lifeline but a rare miss from the penalty spot by Solkhon sealed their fate. Congratulations to Stamford as they march on to the next round. For Kettering it’s a trip to Royston Town next Saturday and back to the league campaign.
