A rampant 5-1 victory maintained Kettering Town‘s excellent start to the new season with five wins out of five. Today they visit Stratford Town looking to keep the momentum going for as long as possible heading into the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round next Saturday away to Romford. Today’s focus though is firmly on win number six.

The match gets underway at Stratford and they have a free-kick 35yds out, it’s taken by ex-Poppy Grocott but high over the crossbar. A very quiet start to the match as both teams struggling to get control for any period of time and create a clear-cut opening with ten minutes gone. A couple of doidgy challenges from Stohrer and the second one is followed by a yellow card from the referee.

Goal!GOAL: A little livelier as first Taylor heads over White’s crossbar and then at the other end Richens shoots over from distance. Ben Milnes picks the ball up from distance, looks up and curls it past the keeper into the far corner. Great strike. 1-0 to Kettering on fifteen minutes.

Goal!GOAL: A little livelier as first Taylor heads over White’s crossbar and then at the other end Richens shoots over from distance. Ben Milnes Well that lead didn’t last much past the restart as the home side are quickly back on level terms. A mess-up between Stohrer and White allows Mike Taylor to slot the ball into an empty net.

A free-kick just outside the area as Hoenes is fouled by Wilson. Milnes bends it round the wall but straight to keeper Vaughan. After the flurry of chances and two goals it’s gone a little quiet again as both sides take a breather. Another ex-Poppy, Wilson Carvalho fires over the crossbar from close-in shortly after the half-hour mark as the home side looking more in their comfort zone than Kettering.

Goal!GOAL: The match swings back the other way as Kettering begin to pressure the home side. First a good stop by keeper Vaughan from Hoenes’ shot and Kelly’s free-kick is headed just past the upright from Towers. Right on the stroke of half-time, Gary Stohrer strides into the area and smashes the ball past Vaughan. 2-1 to Kettering.

Half-time:   Stratford Town 1   Kettering Town 2

Goal!GOAL: The second-half is underway with Kettering looking to pick up where they left off. They make a change as Towers is replaced by Solkhon. Milnes tries his luck from distance but this one is wide of the target. Almost another for Poppies but Borg’s strike just goes outside the upright. There is Kettering’s third on 54 minutes courtesy of a Kelly-Evans volley into the top corner.

A good build up as Hoenes cross was headed into the path of Kelly-Evans who makes no mistake and Kettering are well on their way to making it six out-of six but there’s still another half-hour to see this game out. Poppies in the ascendancy as Stohrer’s strike is just wide of the target. Changes made by both sides as Stratford switch Taylor for Monteiro and Poppies switch out Borg for Foy.

Oh dear, a case of deja vu for Poppies as they are down to 10 men following the dismissal of Dion Kelly-Evans for a sliding tackle, that despite getting the ball, the referee decided was high and dangerous. That will buoy up the home side as Carvalho fires high over the target. Kettering have twenty minutes to protect their lead with a player short following that harsh red card. Monteiro fires over the crossbar from distance.

With 15 minutes left to see this one out, Kettering swap out Milnes for Toseland. They have a two-goal cushion, but the home side getting a goal could put Poppies under a lot of pressure in the closing minutes of this match. It’s another test of character for Kettering. White makes a good save from Skendi down low but the offside flag was up anyway with ten minutes remaining of normal time remaining.

Kettering understandably on the back foot with a man disadvantage as the home side try their best to reduce the two-goal deficit. Precious minutes tick away as Fisher’s strike is no trouble for keeper White and Kettering look to be heading for win number six. Kettering easily see out the five minutes of stoppage time and it’s six out-of six. Cruising after going 3-1 up, the red card meant they had to close up and protect their lead which they did well.

Next up for Kettering Town it’s a break from league action as they make an away trip to Romford next Saturday in the FA Cup 1st qualifying round.
