Having been recently dumnped out the FA Cup it’s now the FA Trophy that occupies Kettering Town this Saturday as they host fellow Premier League outfit Stourbridge at Latimer Park in the first round qualifying . The Poppies may decide to give a few of the non-regular starters an opportunity to get a run out in this competition.

Goal!GOAL: The match gets underway with both teams taking time to settle into the play with little of note in the opening exchanges. Poppies’ Ed Hotter is booked for leading with an arm. White is alert to clear a cross as the visitors set their stall out. Kettering counter fast and catch the visitors on the back foot as Ben Toseland applies a superb finish from Hoenes pass into the area.

A warning for the Poppies defence to stay alert as White gets down to block a one-on-one with Benbow and the follow up is flagged offside. The Stourbridge striker had a glorious chance to level for the visitors in what, so far, has been a game of few opportunities for either side.

Stourbridge making the most of dismal weather conditions at Latimer Park but this time a breakthrough ends with a shot off target. A volley from Broadhurst is lifted high over the crossbar but it’s another chance for the visitors as they have the upperhand going into the break.

At the other end it’s Edmund Hotter who connects with a strike and a last ditch effort on the line sees it blocked and the resulting corner is easily cleared. Two minutes of time added on without incident takes us into the half-time break.

Half-time:   Kettering Town 1   Stourbridge 0

The two teams out for the second-half with Hotter being replaced by Meikle who almost makes an immediate impact but his shot id deflected for a corner. A swap for the visitors with Birch replacing Forde and moments later Richens and O’Connor come on to replace Borg and Solkhon.

A mistake by Rowe-Turner allows the visitors in on goal but White collects the tepid effort. Steele comes on to replace Westlake for Stourbridge. Another attack from the vissitors and Kettering just manage to scramble the ball behind for a corner and the ball in is put just wide for a goal kick.

Kettering under the cosh here at the start of the second-half but so far holding onto their slender 1-0 lead. A superb cross that invites a header but neither Toseland or O’Connor can make it count for Poppies. It’s been a close encounter so far as you’d probably expect from the two teams lying in 1st and 3rd in the league table.

O’Connor getting back into it after a long lay-off, turns, beats the defenders but his strike is put behind for a corner which Stourbridge eventually clear. A fairly low attendance on this dismal afternoon at Latimer Park. Perhaps the FA Trophy not the draw it used to be and Kettering quite rightly have far more importance placed on their league campaign to be honest.

Goal!GOAL: O’Connor has the ball in the net but its ruled offside as Kettering go looking for all-important killer second goal. That goal finally comes from the head of Rhys Hoenes after he thumps home a cross from Milnes. Kettering are 2-0 up and that should just about do it for this afternoon.

Kettering weathered the storm and hit back late to get the two-goal lead. The visitors will have been deflated by conceding that second goal as Wren makes a good save from Toseland to deny a third for Poppies. Richens is shown the yellow card. There goes the fianl whistle. Not a comfortable victory as Stourbridge hung in there but they are through to the next round.
