The opening fixture of the league season for Kettering Town could be a tough start as they travel to nearby Slough Town who made the play-offs last season but didn’t gain promotion. The Poppies have some familiar faces in their team but one or two new ones that will need to quickly settle into their stride for today’s tricky away opener.

The new season gets underway at Holloways Park and the opening 15 minutes or so are fairly quiet as the two teams settle into the match. The home side win a corner but it’s easily cleared and at the other end Brighton’s free-kick is saved well by Turner. Brighton fires another free-kick over the crossbar and a scramble in the Rebel’s area ends in a foul on keeper Turner.

Goal!GOAL: The Poppies are beginning to apply more pressure and it finally pays off on 27 minutes when free-kick is swubng over by James Brighton and Brett Solkhon heads past Turner and into the net. Kettering get off to a great start to the new season as captain Solkhon leads the way.

Kettering almost going two-up but Milnes can’t quite connect with Steven’s low cross from out wide. It’s all Poppies at the moment as the Rebels look very sluggish and Howe has a shot blocked by the home defence who are having a tough time of the opening half-hour. Kettering in the ascendancy heading into the break as Turner has to be alert to deny a Milnes’ header for Poppies.

Half-time:   Slough Town 0   Kettering Town 1

The second-half gets underway as the home side swap out Nathan Smart for Manny Williams. A long throw is met by Lench but he heads wide as the Rebels have their first clear sight of the Poppies goal. Kettering respond quickly as Stevens ghosts through the home defence but slips at the crucial moment and his shot goes wide of the target.

Slough almost pulled level two minutes later when Lench fired wide after good work by Williams rounding keeper White to lay on the cross. The game starting to liven up approaching the hour mark as first Rebels’ Williams header is flicked on by Flood but not enough pace on it and at the other end Poppies’ Milnes again tests keeper Turner.

Kettering make a change as Rhys Hoenes comes on for James Brighton and another change for the home side as Matt lench is replaced by James Dobson on 67 minutes. A fumble by Turner allows Kettering a sight of goal but they can’t convert and it flies over the crossbar with 15 minutes remaining that was a big let-off for the home side. Turner makes a save from a long distance attempt as Kettering are having a good spell and looking for the killer second goal.

Slough make their final change as Gavin James comes on for George Wells on 78 minutes. Dobson almost made an immediate impact from the bench but White manages to make the crucial save. Can Kettering hold onto their slender 1-0 lead to gain the win as they head into the final ten minutes of normal time. Kettering make a change as Matthew Stevens is replaced by Gary Stohrer on 82 minutes.

Goal!GOAL: With the clock ticking away and Kettering looking to head home with the win and three points up pops Ben Milnes to fire home and make it 2-0. That’s surely sealed the points for the Poppies as they now lead 2-0 headed into time added on.

Goal!GOAL: It’s late drama here at Holloways Park as Slough substitute James Dobson fires part Poppies keeper White from 25 yards out to make it 2-1 a minute into time added on. Kettering will need to pay attention in the remaining stoppage time minutes to secure the points.

Goalscorer Ben Milnes is replaced by Munashire Sundire two minutes into time added on. There goes the final whistle and after a late scare Kettering secure the opening day victory and take home the three points courtesy of goals by Solkhon and Milnes. A good away win in a tough away start to the season and its a home opener against Redditch Utd on Tuesday up next for Poppies.
