Alfreton defeat leaves Hinckley to carry the flag in FA Cup

facupA 2-0 defeat for current Conference North leaders Alfreton Town in their FA Cup 1st Round Replay at the Moss Rose ground by Football League Two outfit Macclesfield Town left Hinckley Utd the lone flag bearers still surviving in the FA Cup from among the Conference North clubs.

The 1,783 crowd waited until almost the hour mark before the home side broke the deadlock through Jonathan Parkin and on 78 minutes Mike Sheron made the result safe for the Silkmen. Macclesfield Town are away to Hull City in the 2nd Round.

They think it's all over ..

facup .. and for most Conference North teams it is. Having done well to reach the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, with some Conference North teams overcoming Conference opposition in the process, 4 of the 6 clubs were dumped out on Saturday, with Alfreton Town's tie going to a replay.

Hinckley Utd deserve the plaudits for beating Torquay Utd 2-0 at home and were rewarded with another home tie against Bristol City or Brentford. The Knitters also collect the win bonus of £16,000 and their Second Round match will be shown live on BBC TV.

Two teams lost at home, Southport were beaten 3-1 by Hereford Utd and Stafford Rangers lost to Chester City 2-0. Lancaster City were perhaps unlucky to suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat away to MK Dons, but plucky Vauxhall Motors can have no complaints about their 5-2 drubbing at Bury.

So it's left to Hinckley Utd, and perhaps Alfreton Town, to carry the Conference North flag in the FA Cup, although the current league leaders must first win a replay on Nov 23rd away to Macclesfield Town after drawing 1-1 on Saturday. Should Alfreton Town win their replay, they will be away to Hull City in the Second Round on Saturday December 4th, 2004.

Conference North clubs triumph in FA Cup replays

facupOf the three FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round Replays this week, the two pitting Conference North clubs against their Conference counterparts ended in triumph for the 'underdog'.

Hinckley Utd took Burton Albion to extra-time and then won 4-1 on penalties at Burton's Eton Park, they now host League One outfit Torquay Utd in the 1st Round proper. Lancaster City didn't require extra-time or penalties as they beat Scarborough 1-0 at the McCain Stadium to progress through and set up a trip to League One outfit Milton Keynes Dons.

The only other replay involving Conference North clubs was between Alfreton Town and Worksop Town with the current league leaders finally overcoming Worksop 2-1 in extra-time. The Robins now face a home tie against League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.

The revised draw for the FA Cup 1st Round proper involving Conference North clubs is as follows:

Bury v Vauxhall Motors
Hinckley United v Torquay United
Alfreton Town v Macclesfield Town
Stafford Rangers v Chester City
Southport v Hereford United
Milton Keynes Dons v Lancaster City

Ties to be played on Saturday 13th November 2004, with winners each receiving £16,000.

Conference North clubs still battling hard in the FA Cup

facupHucknall Town crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday, thrashed 5-1 at Conference outfit Morecambe, but Southport, 3-1 winners at home to Hyde Utd, Vauxhall Motors, 2-1 conquerors of hosts Northwich Victoria, and Stafford Rangers, 2-1 victors over visitors Gateshead, each picked up another bonus cheque, this time for £10,000.

Of the other 4 Conference North clubs fighting to boost their own coffers and a chance for further glory, Lancaster City and Hinckley Utd both held their own against Conference opponents, but both now need to win tricky away matches in their respective replays against Scarborough and Burton Albion.

The two remaining Conference North clubs still require another match to separate them after Alfreton Town drew 1-1 at Worksop Town, to see who gets the prize money bonus and the dubious honour of hosting Macclesfield Town at home in the 1st Round.

The draw for the FA Cup 1st Round proper involving Conference North clubs was as follows:

Bury v Vauxhall Motors
Hinckley United or Burton Albion v Torquay United
Worksop Town or Alfreton Town v Macclesfield Town
Stafford Rangers v Chester City
Southport v Hereford United
Milton Keynes Dons v Lancaster City or Scarborough

Ties to be played on Saturday 13th November 2004, with winners each receiving £16,000.
