Howe strike gives Poppies narrow win at Lancaster City

Poppies boss Morell Maison is, quite rightly in my opinion, taking no chances for the match against Lancaster City and has named an unchanged side as the Conference North season gets right down to the wire. The only change is on the bench as Nathan Peprah has replaced Serge Makofo.

A fairly quiet opening period for Kettering and the home side has done a good job of keeping top scorer Rene Howe and the rest of the Poppies strike force at bay for the first half-hour. Poppies travelling support has been forced to be patient as the first 45 minutes came to a close with the score still deadlocked at 0-0, the closest Kettering came was a Marna shot that hit the crossbar.

Half-time: Lancaster City 0   Kettering Town 0

The second-half continued where the first 45 left off as Kettering struggled to breakdown a stubborn home defence and at the same time remain wary of being caught on the break. The longer the scoreline remained goaless the more confident the Dolly Blues defence grew.

The breakthrough for Poppies finally came shortly after the hour mark and once again it was that man Rene Howe who provided the final touch that fired Kettering into a 1-0 lead on 66 minutes. Try as they might, Kettering just could not increase their lead and at the final whistle the result remained 1-0 and a crucial 3pts for the Poppies.

Perhaps not the scoreline that most Poppies fans expected, but at this stage of the season, the most important result was unarguably a win for Kettering and that's exactly what happened, albeit by the narrowest of margins, the victory keeps them top of the table going into Monday's vital clash with rivals Harrogate Town.
