Late goal-flurry as Poppies win 3-2 at Trinity
Gainsborough Trinity 2
Parker 8
Hannah 90
Kettering Town 3
McIlwain 32
Westcarr 39
Hall 90
Kettering Town boss Morell Maison opted for the familiar front pairing of Zema Abbey and Craig Westcarr, Mark Osborn in goal, while Darren Caskey started on the bench at the Northolme.
A bad start for the Poppies as they deservedly fell behind to the home side on 8 minutes with a simple tap-in for Wes Parker. However, on 32 minutes a Westcarr shot was spilled by Sollitt in the Trinity goal and Craig McIlwain pounced to pull his side back on level terms at 1-1.
Kettering began to put increasing pressure on the home goal and a passing exchange between Makofo and Westcarr ended with Craig Westcarr smashing the ball past Sollitt to put the Poppies in front for the first time on 39 minutes. Zema Abbey should have increased the Poppies lead with 3 minutes to go until half-time, but his header flashed wide of the post and Kettering went into the break still narrowly leading 2-1.
The game appeared to be going off the boil midway through the second period with Kettering looking comfortable despite only having a one-goal lead. On 72 minutes another Abbey goal-bound header saw an excellent diving save as Sollitt tipped the ball round the post and the scoreline remained 2-1.
Just as the match headed into the final seconds, a Rene Howe cross into the box was smashed home by Andy Hall to seemingly put the game beyond Trinity and make it 3-1 to Kettering. They relaxed too soon however, as the home side immediately pulled a goal back through Ross Hannah to again only trail by a single goal, but the final whistle ended any chance of Kettering allowing an equaliser and they finally ran out 3-2 winners.
