Poppies recover after early setback at home to Yaxley
Yaxley 1 Kettering Town started with a strong lineup against UCL outfit Yaxley in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round with Darren Caskey in midfield and Craig Westcarr a lone striker flanked by Andy Hall and Serge Makofo (who replaces Rene Howe, apparently injured in the warm-up). Despite all the hype and pre-match talk of taking the opposition seriously, Kettering found themsleves losing 1-0 to the UCL side as the home supporters looked on stunned when Craig McIlwain deflected the ball past his own keeper and Yaxley fairly deserved their lead. Struggling to find their rythmn, it took the home side a while to get back into the match, but they leveled to the relief of the home support when another own goal, this time from the visitors' Blewett, made it 1-1. Picking up the pace again, Kettering eventually took a 2-1 lead through Darren Caskey to restore some order to the preceedings just before the half-time break. Into the second-half and Kettering began to take control as Craig Westcarr made it 3-1 to the home side and the Poppies supporters began to relax a little more. As the game went on the visitors started to wilt under the extra pressure and Luke Graham struck a superb ball to make it 4-1 to Kettering. Shortly before the final whistle and with the result already in the bag, Kettering scored a 5th goal and a second for Craig Westcarr, finally runing out 5-1 winners to safely negotiate through to the next round of the FA Cup.
