Poppies continue pre-season scoring spree

Arlesey TownKettering Town continued their pre-season campaign with another goal-spree, this time a 5-0 victory away to Arlesey Town of the Ryman League Division One North.

Although no-one of course should be getting carried away by the high-scoring wins, the professional performances and clinical finishing are encouraging signs that the team and particularly manager Morrell Maison are taking their pre-season preparation seriously and working together as a squad and not just a collection of individuals.

Kettering took 28 minutes to opening the scoring after stubborn early resistance from their hosts, but two goals from Zema Abbey in addition to strikes from Craig Westcarr, Jean-Paul Marna and a Stefan Morely free-kick resulted in a 5-0 victory.

Att: 110

Kettering: Osborn, Burrows, Graham, McIlwain, Solkhon, Morely, Boucard, Hall, Abbey, Westcarr, Olaleye. Subs: Marna, Makofo, Nicell, Midgeley.

Kettering's next match in their pre-season campaign is away to Raunds Town this Saturday.

Poppies v Posh ends all square

Peterborough UtdKettering Town played host to Football League Division Two outfit Peterborough Utd at Rockingham Road this afternoon, with the match ending all square at 3-3.

Brett Solkhon scored the first Poppies goal and second-half substitute Rene Howe added two more as part of the more impressive moments, however, poor defending on several occasions allowed Keith Alexander's Posh to also score three times.

Peterborough took a 3-1 lead going into the final minutes of the match before Howe's late brace earned the home side a creditable 3-3 draw.

Kettering continue their pre-season programme with an away fixture at Stony Stratford Town on Tuesday night.

Marna scores twice but Poppies beaten at Stamford

StamfordKettering Town boss Morrell Maison used last night's friendly against Stamford to run the rule over several trialists and allow other players to hone their match fitness.

Kettering found themselves twice behind, the first from the penalty spot and twice came back to level terms through two excellent finishes from Jean-Paul Marna.

Stamford must have had a sense of deja vu after Marna had scored a brace at the Vic Couzens Stadium back last November playing for Berkhamsted Town, but the Daniels regained the lead for the third and final time and eventually ran out 3-2 winners.

Kettering continue their pre-season matches with the visit of former Poppies striker Keith Alexander's Peterborough Utd to Rockingham Road on Saturday.

Kettering: Bussey, Briscoe, Smith, Fowkes, Bignall (sub Makofo 46 mins), Noubissie, Findlay, Gradosielski, Maizi, Abbey (sub Midgley 30 mins), Marna (sub Peter 58 mins).

Poppies v Cobblers opener ends goaless

Northampton TownKettering Town, sporting their new home strip, opened their pre-season programme with a 0-0 draw at Rockingham Road against League One outfit, Northampton Town.

A relatively quiet first-half as both sides settled into their first preseason friendly with neither goalkeeper having to exert themselves while the midfields dominated the lion's share of the play.

The second-half livened up as several changes on both teams seemed to open up the game a little and both goalkeepers were quickly called into action.

Despite further opportunites as the game wore on, neither defence gave much away and the match ended all-square at 0-0.

Att: 1,131

Kettering: Mark Osborn, Luke Graham, Brett Solkhon, Nathan Koo-Boothe, Craig McIlwain, Patrik Noubissie, Andre Boucard, Andy Hall, Zema Abbey, Parys Okai, Craig Westcarr.

Subs: Patrik Peter, Rene Howe, Jean-Paul Marna, Moses Olaleye, Neil Midgley, Michael Briscoe, Nick Bussey, Maizi.

New signings Darren Caskey (ankle injury) and Mark Burrows (illness) are currently sidelined, but expected to become fit and available sometime during the pre-season programme.
