Its the start of a new season for newly-promoted Kettering Town who face a tough challenge in the National League North and kick-off their campaign with a home opener against old rivals AFC Telford Utd. There will be plenty of tough fixtures ahead, not least those that require long journeys ‘oop North and a lot of familiar opponents, including the long haul to face Darlington next Saturday. On Tuesday the Poppies travel to fellow newly-promoted outfit King’s Lynn Town and like today’s match will likely feature a host of new faces wearing the red and white of Kettering Town of course a new manager, namely Nicky Eaden.

The match gets underway with the visitors settling quickly but the Poppies ease their way into the action with a free-kick and a header wide of the target by Kennedy. White makes a good save Williams as Telford counter with ten minutes gone and then Knight fires wide of the home goal. O’Connor shoots wide as the game opens up in the first 20 minutes with chances at both ends.

Kettering have succession of corners but cannot make them count and haven’t really caused much trouble yet for Corey Addai in the visitor’s goal. The Poppies are in the ascendancy and yet another corner, it falls to Lindon Meikle, his shot is charged down, loud shouts for handball but the referee waves play on with half-an-hour gone. Telford’s Ellis Deeney is booked for a foul on Nti.

A great save from Paul White as he tips Williams’ spot-kick onto the crossbar to keep it 1-1, but Poppies are down to ten men for the remainder of the match.

Poppies boss Eaden makes a double change as Carta and O’Connor make way for Stohrer and Kelly as it looks like he is going to try and hold on for the f20 minutes or so. Shortly afterward Telford make a double swap with Deeney and Dinaga replaced by Brown and McQuilkin on 75 minutes. Telford corner, header over, another corner again Kettering survive. The visitors will be pressing hard for the win with their man advantage. The last change for Telford as Henry Cowans replaces Darryl Knight. on 84 minutes.

There goes the final whistle and it’s a great start to the Poppies new campaign and you can’t say it isn’t deserved. Telford threw everything at them but they stood firm and bounced back to claim all three points.
