An uncharacteristic poor spell for Kettering Town has eroded their lead at the top of the table to just a single goal difference as they entertain Lowestoft Town this Saturday. The Poppies need to get back to their previous good form before they are overtaken heading into the festive period.

Good news for Kettering is that they successfully appealed the red card for Dan Holman and he starts the match today. Nothing much happening in the early exchanges but a booking for a foul on Holman is the ‘highlight’ of the action so far. The best chance of the afternoon falls to Stohrer who did well to turn his man and fire low but his shot just crept the ‘wrong’ side of the upright.

Goal!GOAL: An early change for the visitors, they swap out Fowkes for Fisk. Another quality chance for Poppies but the keeper reaches out a hand to deny the opener. Finally they break the deadlock as a mis-kick by the visitor’s defence and Aaron O’Connor pounces to round the keeper and score.

Kettering have that vital opening goal now can they build on it and turn around what has been a poor showing at Latimer Park in recent matches to get back on the title trail. Almost a second as O’Connor shoots for goal but it’s cleared off the line and he heads over from the resulting corner when he was in plenty of space.

Half-time:   Kettering Town 1   Lowestoft Town 0

The second-half gets underway at Latimer Park and O’Connor looking very lively today tries to lob the keeper but it’s just over the crossbar. O’Connor looks to have scored a second but it’s ruled out when the referee mistakenly awards the keeper a free-kick when he ran into his own defender. Poor officiating there lets hope it’s not crucial.

A good cross from Kelly-Evans and a diving header by Holman but it goes just over the crossbar as Kettering pile on the pressure looking for a second. O’Connor is being replaced on 56 minutes after picking up a knock and on comes Rhys Hoenes who could do with recapturing his goal-scoring form for Poppies again.

Goal!GOAL: A little scrappy approaching the hour mark with the windy conditions not helping. Holman wins a free-kick on the edge of the area but Kelly hits it straight into the wall, Hoenes finds the net but is ruled offside. A superb free-kick by Kelly is met by Declan Towers and it’s 2-0.

Goal!GOAL: Kettering have suddenly switched into second gear as they coast into a 3-0 lead when substitute Hoenes plays in Kelly and he slots it low into the bottom corner. That should give the Poppies the breathing space to kill off the game and secure the points with a much needed win.

Ben Toseland replaces Declan Towers as a dribbling run from Michael Richens leaves defenders trailing in his wake but he fires wide of the target. Stohrer almost makes it four but the keeper somehow manages to keep it out. It’s all Kettering at the moment as the visitors looking shell-shocked. Into the final ten minutes as Solkhon replaces Kelly.

Richens shown the yellow card for a needless pull back. A rave save for Paul White in the Poppies goal as Lowestoft finally show signs of life late in the game. Holman has the ball in the net but it’s ruled offside. Another chance for Holman from distance but it’s over the crossbar. Three minutes of stoppage time but this game was over as a contest a while ago.

Kettering could really have done with more goals on the scoreboard this afternoon but a 3-0 win is nothing to complain about. Their closest rivals Stourbridge keeping pace with a good 3-0 away win at Leiston. Celebrations at the final whistle for the Poppies and it’s away to Banbury Utd next Saturday to continue their title challenge.
