It’s a return to league action for league leaders Kettering Town this Saturday as they travel to newcomers Needham Market looking to consolidate their position at the top of the league table. The Poppies success in the FA Trophy will mean they face a minor fixture crunch and next Saturday they will again be in FA Trophy action away to local outfit Stamford AFC.

The match gets underway with Kettering decidedly on the front foot compared to previous matches as Meikle has an effort that goes well wide of the target. White off his line to collect a decent cross off the head of Issa. Richens volleys from distance but it hits Kelly-Evans. Good build up play from Poppies still still no clear-cut finishing.

Another half-chance for Kettering but the keeper palms away the strike from Milnes. Again Kelly breaks down the line and slips the ball inside to Milne but his effort is well over the crossbar. Plenty of the possession for Poppies but haven’t yet turned it into goals despite some good looks. The home side had a couple of early chances but White was solid when needed.

Half-time:   Needham Market 0   Kettering Town 0

Goal!GOAL: The second-half gets underway at Bloomfields and Kettering need to be sharper in front of goal to come away with all the points this afternoon. Kelly has a shot blocked but Poppies are not to be denied the lead as Lindon Meikle buries a low driven cross into the back of the net.

Goal!GOAL: That signals a change for the home side as Baker comes on. Kettering win a corner and are pressing for a killer second but Richens fires high over the crossbar. Kettering surging forward at every opportunity pressing for the second goal. It inevitably comes in the shape of Aaron O’Connor who slots past the keeper after a great pass from Meikle.

Goal!GOAL: The home side make another change but the first piece of action the oncoming substitute sees is his side going further behind. What a strike there from Lindon Meikle who picked up the pass from Hoenes from a good distance out and smashes it past the despairing keeper Jessup and into the net.

There is no way back for the home side now as Kettering are really finding their rhythm and appear to have changed into their shooting boots for the second half. Kettering make a double change as Toseland and Solkhon replace Hoenes and Kelly to see the game out. Borg brought down just outside the box and it looks like Milnes fancies his chances but he puts it over the crossbar.

Into time added-on as the traveling Kettering fans celebrate another victory that keeps them firmly rooted at the top of the table. They started well, couldn’t finish in the first half, but they certainly sorted that out in the second to score three good goals without reply. It’s back home for a league match on Tuesday night hosting a resurgent King’s Lynn Town.
