After another successful sidestep into the FA Cup last Saturday, Kettering Town get back to business in the league with a trip to Alvechurch. Their lead at the top was cut to two points and there is no room for another lacklustre display like they showed in their home defeat to Leiston. Poppies manager Marcus Law with virtually a full squad to choose from including recent signing Luke Graham.

Goal!GOAL: A flying start for Kettering at Alvechurch as they are awarded a penalty in the opening minutes and in the absence of Brett Solkhon, who is sat on the subs bench, Rhys Hoenes steps up and buries it into the net. 1-0 to Kettering after just two minutes of play.

Goal!GOAL: Kettering’s lead didn’t last for long as the home side’s O’Callaghan has pulled them back on level terms at 1-1. The Poppies defence not looking as solid as they have been recently as a mix-up between White and Graham allows Danny O’Callaghan a tap-in and they are back to square one after taking that very early lead.

Kettering alomst re-took the lead as a weighted ball from Graham finds Kelly-Evans and his pall is headed just over from Hoenes but it’s flagged offside anyway. Half-an-hour gone and the sides level at 1-1. Turton is booked for Alvechurch. White tips over the crossbar to concede a corner but the Poppies defence scrambles it clear.

Goal!GOAL: A late flurry by the Poppies here headed into the break and they win a corner. The ball is floated in and Declan Towers rises highest to plant a perfect header into the top corner past the stranded keeper Sargeant. Right on the stroke of half-time and Kettering are back in front at 2-1.

Half-time:   Alvechurch 1   Kettering Town 2

A scuffle at the half-time whistle leads to a booking at the start of the second-half for the home side’s Cook and a lecture for both benches from the referee as the second-half gets underway.with Kettering in their change sky blue strip. An early substitution as the cautioned Cook is replaced by Yates for Alvechurch.

Goal!GOAL: Milnes makes way for Solkhon. Kettering pressing, Richens shoots over the crossbar. Kettering break forward, it should be easily cleared but the ball is miscued into the path of Rhys Hoenes and keeper Sargeant left totally stranded and an easy side foot into an empty net.

Hoenes fires a free-kick high over the crossbar with Poppies well in the ascendancy. Kettering looking to close this one out now after having put themselves into a two-goal lead. It’s been a fairly quiet last twenty minutes with both sides working away but unable to produce that clear-cut finish. A swap for Poppies as Michael Richens is replaced by Andrea Borg on 79 minutes.

Zach Foster brings down Borg and the Alvechurch defender is booked and Kettering have a free-kick just outside the area, it’s played wide and goes out for a Poppies throw. Kettering really content to make sure the home side doesn’t get another opportunity and a long range strike is high over White’s crossbar. Into stoppage time and Kettering look to have secured the away win. A good sight of goal but its spurned by Kettering in the final minutes.

There’s the final whistle and Kettering are back on the wining track with a solid 3-1 win at Alvechurch. Tow goals from Hoenes and a header from Towers saw them come away with all three points. A trip to Banbury Utd in the league Cup on Tuesday and then it’s the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup at home to Hednesford Town next Saturday.
