A come-from-behind but ultimately comfortable victory saw Kettering Town strengthen their grip on a play-off spot on Tuesday night and this Saturday’s home fixture against Frome Town should afford another opportunity for the Poppies to stake their claim for a top five finish.

Goal!GOAL: A good start to the match by the home side already applying pressure to the visitor’s defence. They get an early reward when a ball played in by Meikle to the feet of Rhys Hoenes who looks up and drills it past the keeper into the bottom corner. With barely ten minutes gone Kettering lead 1-0 and are looking good for their advantage so far this afternoon.

The visitors trying to get back on level terms but not able to get that clear-cut opening although a looped header lands on the roof of the goal. At the other end O’Connor sees his shot charged down by the visitor’s defence. A bad miss by O’Connor who hits his effort over the crossbar when he looked odds-on to double the Poppies lead.

Goal!GOAL: It doesn’t take much longer though for Kettering to get their second as Rhys Hoenes bears down on goal and is bundled over by the desperate defender, the referee doesn’t hesitate, points to the spot. Up steps Brett Solkhon and smashes into the right-hand corner to make it 2-0. The visitors haven’t given up just yet but Kettering are certainly looking sharp this afternoon.

Frustration from the visitors as a petulant kick out at Matt Stevens quite rightly earns the Frome defender a yellow card. Frome begin to battle their way back into the match but it doesn’t turn into goals, mainly due to the alertness of Poppies goalkeeper Paul White who saves one effort and races off his line to clear a through ball. At the other end Stevens fires into the side netting.

Half-time:   Kettering Town 2   Frome Town 0

Goal!GOAL: The second-half gets underway and the yellow card is quickly produced for a late challenge on Pendley. Kettering surge forward again and Toesland’s ball into the box is met by Aaron O’Connor who slots home to make it 3-0. That should be game over with Kettering playing the way they are this afternoon and there could easily be more goals into the bargain.

O’Connor bears down on goal but his early strike clears the crossbar. Kettering’s first change comes as Solkhon makes way for Milnes. Shortly afterwards a double substitution for Kettering as Howe replaces O’Connor and the recently returned Carvalho replaces Hoenes. The last ten minutes have been fairly quiet and as we head into the final ten minutes or so Kettering are comfortably heading for a win.

Howe has his first chance since coming on but it’s straight at the keeper. All of a sudden the visitors have sprung into action. First a shot that went wide but should’ve been on target and then a shot on target that rebounded back off the post from Hemmings. If they’re hoping to salvage something they’ve left a it a tad too late but it does at least liven up the closing minutes of the match. Milnes almost played clear but the keeper collects.

Last ditch chances at both ends. First Frome shoot straight at keeper White, then at the other end Howe fires wide of the goal. The final whistle brings another comfortable victory for the Poppies, this time by a 3-0 margin and keeps them firmly on course for the play-offs at the end of the season. Next up for Kettering Town are Dorchester Town who visit Latimer Park on Tuesday night.
