A solid display of clinical finishing enabled Kettering Town to take back the top spot last Saturday and today they host Biggleswade Town at what is fast becoming ‘fortress’ Latimer Park. Kettering need to maintain that winning momentum with the bookies favorites Hereford close on their shoulders with plenty of games in hand over the Poppies. Although the title is the Bulls to lose at this point, Kettering must keep winning to make sure they are on hand should Hereford suddenly have a poor run of form.

The match gets underway at Latimer Park with the visitors in a change strip of orange which doesn’t exactly go well with the Poppies hone strip for the poor match officials. The surface is slick and as if to prove a point a good through ball skims straight through to the Waders keeper before Stevens can collect. Howe has the ball in the net but is adjudged to have pushed his marker, which doesn’t sit well with the home faithful.

Another decision for the crowd to voice their disapproval as Milnes is clattered into in the area but the official says play on, although Milnes will require treatment. The challenge was bad enough for Milnes to take no further part in the game and on comes Hoenes as Milnes is stretchered off. The referee will had have several minutes there to contemplate that poor decision.

The visitors are certainly fired up but cannot apparently channel their aggression as a yellow card is shown for a hand in Howe’s face. Pendley is booked for a late challenge as the temperature heats up on the pitch and the slippery wet surface isn’t helping. Almost end to end stuff as the Waders fire over the crossbar and at the other end Hoenes has an effort blocked. O’Connor glides into the area but his effort is deflected and Gooch collects.

Goal!GOAL: With half-time approaching Kettering take the lead and it’s Matty Stevens who provides the finishing touch after good work by Hoenes to play him in and with the goal at his mercy Stevens makes no mistake. Kettering lead 1-0 heading into the break.

Goal!GOAL: Another bad challenge, another yellow for the Waders. Kettering trying to build on their lead before half-time as Howe’s glancing header is scrambled clear by the Waders defence. Right on cue and Poppies striker Aaron O’Connor adds to his tally with a tap in as Howe plays him in. 2-0 to Kettering and looking fairly comfortable for their half-time lead.

Half-time:   Kettering Town 2   Biggleswade Town 0

Goal!GOAL: It took Kettering a while to finally find a way past the tigerish Waders defence but two close finishes from good build-up play has been the key as the second-half gets underway at Latimer Park. Hoenes darts inside but fires wide of the target. Hoenes wins a corner, it’s played to the far post where Orrin Pendley cuts inside the defender and smashes the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 and put Poppies firmly in control of the match.

Goal!GOAL: The match has understandably gone a little quiet with that third goal perhaps finally breaking down the resistance from the Waders and a swap for Poppies as Bateman comes on to replace Thomas. A double swap for the Waders looking to change things up trailing 3-0. And change they do as they pull a goal back at Latimer Park with a solid header from a good cross. What is it with Kettering that they seem to switch off completely when 3-0 up?

Poppies win a corner from O’Connor’s deflected strike as conceding a goal seems to have woken them back up again. Stevens is fouled when he shaped to shoot in the area and the referee points to the spot. Up steps Howe and fails to score as the keeper makes a stretching save, the penalty curse strikes again. Perhaps a little harsh to be given in the first place but we must take any opportunities that come our way to kill off the game.

Another yellow card for a Waders defender for dissent this time. The final swpa for Poppies as O’Connor makes way for Stohrer. Time almost up at Latimer Park and it looks like Kettering will retain their top spot for the time being at least. A red card for Biggleswade manager who has obviously drawn the Official’s wrath with a few badly chosen words no doubt. Into time added on, three minutes. Final whistle, comfortable 3-1 win in the end, even missing a penalty, Poppies stay top. Royston Town away next Saturday.
