A good start to the festive period for Kettering Town last Saturday with a thrashing of the bottom outfit Dunstable sees them travel to 8th placed St Neots Town looking to continue their winning ways on Boxing Day before a crucial encounter at home to current league leaders King’s Lynn Town on New Year’s Day.

Goal!GOAL: Kettering got off to the ideal start when on seven minute Gary Stohrer was tripped in the penalty area vy Sinclair and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Rene Howe and fired the spot-kick past Emery in the home goal to make it 1-0 to the Poppies with just 8 minutes gone. Kettering settle into the game and had the better of the first 45 minutes with Emery easily the busier of the two goalkeepers.

Half-time:   St Neots Town 0   Kettering Town 1

Goal!GOAL: St Neots came out for the second-half with an increased urgency and were rewarded just before the hour mark when Sharrif’s strike was deflected to Irwin who headed firmly past White in the Poppies goal. Kettering had plenty of opportunity before the goal to increase their lead but Emery was doing his best to keep his side in the match.

Goal!GOAL: Within five minutes Kettering regained their narrow lead when Meikle latched onto a Stohrer through ball, played in Rene Howe and the Poppies striker unleashed a cracking drive past Emery into the top corner to make it 2-1 to Kettering on 63 minutes. Kettering increased their lead to 3-1 four minutes later when Aaron O’Connor headed past the stretching Emery from a Stohrer cross and the home keeper couldn’t keep it out.

Goal!GOAL: It took only a minute before St Neots substitute Williams pounced on a loose ball after White saved the initial strike and reduced the deficit to a single goal at 3-2 on 68 minutes. This seemed to spur Kettering on and they began to pressure the home goal but again Emery tried his best to keep his side in with a chance.

Goal!GOAL: He managed until the 78th minute when substitute Matty Stevens , who had replaced Howe, raced into the area and chipped the keeper with ball dropping under the bar and into the net to make it 4-2. That goal seemed to knock the wind out of the home side and Kettering could have increased their lead before the final whistle signaled their second win in three days.

It was a good day for Poppies with results elsewhere going their way and they go into Monday’s home clash with current leaders King’s Lynn Town only a single point behind them in second place.
