Plenty of drama preceded Kettering Town‘s table topping victory on Saturday but the players showed a great deal of character to overcome the setback of goalkeeper White’s early dismissal. The Poppies will need to continue in the same vein when they host Banbury Utd at Latimer Park on Tuesday night. The Pilgrims showed their own character to eventually run out 4-3 winners away to King’s Langley on Saturday and should again pose a tough challenge to Kettering’s promotion chasing credentials.

Goal!GOAL: Paul White started his last game before his three-match ban takes effect as the Poppies in all red strip were quick out the blocks tonight and put several warning shots over the Pilgrims bows before Brett Solkhon latched onto a Milnes cross to score from close in making it 1-0 to Kettering on 9 minutes.

Kettering took the game to Banbury never letting them settle and despite coming close on several more occasions, Hoenes had a shot blocked, Mulligan headed wide of the target and Richens shaved the outside of the upright, went into the half-time break only the single goal in front but feeling confident for the second 45 minutes ahead.

Half-time:   Kettering Town 1   Banbury Utd 0

Goal!GOAL: The second-half saw Kettering looking to get the second goal and although the visitors had a fair amount of possession they were restricted to a long range effort from George Nash that White made a fine save shortly after the hour mark. Kettering looked solid at the back and got their second goal on 68 minutes when Ben Milnes curled an impressive free-kick past the stretching Pilgrims keeper Harding and into the top corner.

Goal!GOAL: The visitors looked deflated and as the game went into stoppage time it was just enough time left for Rhys Hoenes to be hauled down in the penalty area and the referee pointing to the spot. Rene Howe took responsibility for taking the spot kick and fired past Harding and make it a fairly comfortable 3-0 victory. Kettering take another break from the league on Saturday with a cup tie against Bashford Utd.
