Struggling Poppies beaten 2-1 at St Albans CitySep 15th, 2012
St Albans City 2
Toomey 23, 56
Kettering Town 1
After the distraction of the FA Cup it’s back to the grind of the league campaign on Saturday as Kettering Town make the relatively short trip to play St Albans City in what promises to be a tough away fixture for the Poppies. Kettering recorded their first win of the season in Tuesday’s FA Cup replay at home to Wisbech Town and it will be interesting to see if John Beck’s side can carry some of the momentum into Saturday’s match at Clarence park.
GOAL: Kettering could have taken the lead in a busy opening period but poor finishing resumed as normal service after the FA Cup distraction as Byerley, Griffiths and Blazio all spurned good opportunities to score. The home side made the Poppies pay when they went ahead on 23 minutes when Lewis Toomey first beat the offside trap to race through and then beat Laurie Walker to make it 1-0.
Byerley again miscued when in a good position and at the other end Ijaha’s shot flew high over the crossbar as St Albans countered. Either side could have increased the goal tally but despite both keepers seeing their fair share of action the two sides went into the break only separated by the one goal scored by Toomey.
Half-time: St Albans City 1 Kettering Town 0
GOAL: The home side came out to pressure Kettering from the restart and Walker was called into action several times before Hayles again found Lewis Toomey in behind the Poppies static defence and the City striker again finished well to beat Walker and make it 2-0 on 55 minutes.
Kettering began to show some real fight as they battled away to try and reduce the deficit and Griffiths and Gerring came close to scoring before the latter found the net but the goal was ruled out by the referee for a foul. Despite vociferous protests which resulted in Gerring and Byerley receiving yellow cards the goal was not given. City had the ball in the net shortly afterwards but a late flag by the referee’s assistant ruled that one out as well.
GOAL: Mayo’s strike was well saved by Jupp in the home goal as Kettering again pressed forward in numbers to try and get back into the match and salvage something. Kettering did finally manage to get the ball in the net in the 81st minute and this time it stood as Griffiths nodded the ball on for Ed Palmer to sweep it past City keeper Jupp and reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Walker had to be alert as the very lively Toomey almost made it 3-1 but the Poppies keeper saved well to deny the city striker his hat-trick. Kettering pressed hard for an equaliser and came close several times in the dying minutes with efforts from Byerley, Griffiths and Burns but at the final whistle they came away with nothing for their efforts.
